Our Approach to EMDR Therapy

Our EMDR Therapy Services in Media, PA

You may know us from our couples counseling in Springfield, PA, but we now offer EMDR therapy as an option for our clients who experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), addiction, panic attacks, and anxiety. The APA, Department of Defense, and Department of Veteran Affairs support the use of EMDR as a clinical treatment for PTSD. Recent research shows that this may also offer help to those experiencing some phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and sexual dysfunction.

Because it recently became accepted as a viable treatment for PTSD and other disorders, it can prove tough to find a licensed EMDR therapist. Truth Center for Health & Healing believes in the helpful nature of this treatment. Our therapists underwent training, so we can offer EMDR to our clients in Media, PA.

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR offers a non-traditional approach to effectively treat the symptoms of PTSD, addiction, and anxiety. An EMDR therapist works one-on-one with the client. The therapist uses finger movements, musical tones, or other innocuous stimuli to help slow the client’s rapid, rhythmic eye movements as the individual recounts past trauma. As the sessions progress, the therapist uses this processing technique to assist the client in replacing the negative thoughts brought forth by memories of the trauma with positive ones. This type of treatment involves no medication or traditional talk therapy, although the client does recount the traumatic event.

EMDR progresses in eight phases:

  1. Information gathering and sharing

  2. Preparation

  3. Assessment

  4. Desensitization

  5. Installation of positive feelings

  6. Body scan

  7. Closure

  8. Re-evaluation.

As the APA notes, EMDR can help clients who find it hard to discuss the traumatic events they experienced. The VA and DOD issued clinical practice guidelines, which we follow at Truth Center for Health & Healing. Both organizations have “strongly recommended” EMDR as PTSD treatment. The World Health Organization (WHO) and government agencies in Australia, Germany, and the United Kingdom have also recommended this new treatment method.

Benefits of EMDR For Your Mental Health

EMDR takes time to become effective. It’s not like taking medication. As an individual progresses through the eight phases, they come to a greater understanding of the events that led up to their current condition. In phase five, the installation of positive feelings, the individual typically begins experiencing improvements in their symptoms from the EMDR treatment. Typically, undergoing this treatment requires between three and 12 sessions, depending on the severity of the condition and the client.

EMDR isn’t for everyone. If you recently experienced trauma, underwent a brain injury, or received a diagnosis of a hereditary condition, the APA recommends you skip EMDR. Children also should not undergo EMDR if their PTSD or other conditions stem from abuse or neglect.
