What is "Trauma"?

Trauma defined by Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5)  “Exposure to actual or threatened events involving death, serious injury, or sexual violation in one (or more) of the following ways:

  1. Directly experiencing the events.

  2. Witnessing the events in person as they occur to others.

  3. Learning that the events occurred to a close family member or friend.

  4. Experiencing repeated or extreme exposure to adverse details of the events."

One thing to keep in mind is that not one person will experience a traumatic event in the same manner nor will someone whom experiences a traumatic event have trauma afterward.  According to research done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Kaiser Permanente Insurance there are 10 Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) that impact children, adolescents, and ultimately follow into adulthood. Adults with high ACE scores are at greater risk than those with lower scores for physical health issues, mental illness, and early death. Trauma informed therapists work to be knowledgeable about clients trauma and understand the impact of the trauma on the client in the present and for the future.

With the foregoing in mind, it's crucial to realize that every trauma is valid and that trauma therapy in Philadelphia, PA, can provide you with the support and tools you need to work through this trauma and achieve a higher quality of life. What is Trauma Informed Therapy?

Trauma Informed Therapy is being mindful of clients’ trauma and its impact on their relationships, mental health, daily life, and the ability to engage in treatment. Trauma-informed therapists assume that a client could have trauma or tragedy in their history and will take steps to avoid inadvertently triggering or re-traumatizing the client in treatment. Additionally, at Truth Center for Health & Healing, we recognize the importance of addressing life transitions therapy in our trauma-informed approach. Life transitions therapy involves supporting individuals through significant life changes, such as career changes, relocation, loss, or major life events. Our therapists are trained to integrate life transitions therapy into our trauma-informed practices, helping clients navigate these transitions while also addressing any underlying trauma or adversity they may have experienced.

Our Approach to Trauma Therapy

At Truth Center for Health & Healing, we approach trauma therapy with empathy, compassion, and a trauma-informed perspective. We understand that traumatic experiences can have a lasting impact on a person's life, and we strive to work collaboratively with our clients to build a treatment plan that meets their unique needs and goals.

Our therapists enter each session with the client's familial and cultural history in mind. By taking into consideration potential influences and environments in which you’ve had experiences that have shaped you, clients can feel seen, heard, and understood. Often clients are unaware of the protective factors that they have created for themselves in response to any trauma or tragedy. Is Trauma Therapy Right for You?

With a few exceptions, individuals who have seen or experienced trauma can recover more quickly and successfully with the help of a therapist. Traumatic events include hardships that most people might not recognize as causes of PTSD, such as bullying, divorce, homelessness, abandonment, discrimination, or severe medical problems. However, trauma counseling could have harmful effects on someone who has recently tried to commit suicide. Therapists need to prioritize suicidal tendencies first.

There's one more important question to ask before you begin trauma therapy in Montgomery County, PA, or Philadelphia. Will you be able to finish the entire process?
